INVITATION TO A JOURNEY
When the dialog of cultures takes us on a journey
A veritable musical laboratory, the Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival will turn Essaouira into a land of communion and exchange, for the 22nd consecutive year. The Festival invites us to meet artists from different forms of music, all here to prove once more the universality of music.
The universal language of music will speak in all tones and all sounds: Cuban, Tuareg, Tamil as well as jazz, flamenco, and reggae…and of course Gnaoua, at the heart of every dialog, always up for the challenge and eager for fusion. The greatest maâlems and talented artists will set the stage to play with generosity, sincerity, and energy, creating moments of unprecedented and audacious musical exploration.
Because these musicians are extending an invitation to travel. To enter the authentic music with Cuban group Osain del Monte, the Tuaregs of Tinariwen, the proud heirs of flamenco Maria del Mar Moreno and Jorge Pardo, as well as the Amazigh group, Imdiazen. A voyage into contemporary music with the Congolese sorcerer artist Baloji, and the Tamil-British songstress Susheela Raman. But also, a voyage into the very heart of the Tagnaouite: the maâlems who will offer us the best of themselves. From the purest of lilas to the most innovative projects…nearly 20 concerts will lay the ground once again to show the full palette of talents in Gnaoua music.
These different voyages would be incomplete without the spirit of youth. Creative and innovative, yet carrying the torch forward, the young generation is dear to the heart of the Festival and will be represented with dignity: the talented young maâlem Houssam Gania, the rising star of the African world Moh! Kouyaté, the wild Betweenatna… The pleasure of discovery is guaranteed!
And to preserve memory, a tribute, a last stroll through the world of a great jazz artist, the late Randy Weston, an eternal lover of Gnaoua and the true incarnation of the universality music in its many forms.
And, finally, a voyage of hope, when the Human Rights Forum opens up to ideas and alternatives that strive for a better world for women and men from all corners of the globe: this year, the Forum will address the major issue of our time: “The power of culture to fight the culture of violence”.
The Festival is an invitation to all these voyages, in time and in the soul: to let ourselves go, to listen, to journey, to share and embrace three days of magic.
